Shell Hits Market in Khartoum: More than 20 Killed

KHARTOUM: More than 20 people were killed after shells hit a market in the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday, Western media reported.

According to reports quoting a committee of pro-democracy lawyers, an NGO, it was the latest bloodshed in the fighting since April between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The NGO said the shells hit the market in Omdurman neighborhood of the Sudanese capital during an intense exchange of fire between the two forces.

The statement by the committee of pro-democracy lawyers said more than 20 civilians have been killed and many have been injured.

The committee maintains the track of rights violations during the conflict and its civilian victims.

Previously most of the fighting was contained to the western region of Darfur, it has also reached to areas south of Khartoum.

More than 10,000 people killed in Sudan war

According to an estimate by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project more than 10,000 people have been killed in the Sudan war so far.

Aid groups and medics have warned the real toll is more than the recorded figures, with many of those injured and killed never reaching hospitals.

According to the United Nations the conflict has forced an estimated 5.5 million people to flee, both within Sudan and beyond borders.
