KARACHI: Another prominent figure, Shaukat Tarin, who served in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has announced his exit from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and politics, citing health issues.

In a statement, Tarin mentioned that the decision to resign from the Senate seat and exit politics altogether was made on the advice of friends and family.

He becomes the latest in a string of leaders distancing themselves from the former ruling party, joining the ranks of Asad Umar, Usman Dar, Fawad Chaudhry, Shireen Mazari, Pervez Khattak, Mehmood Khan, Ali Zaidi, and Imran Ismail.

The ex-minister’s departure follows a series of events since May 9, marked by party workers vandalizing state installations after Imran Khan’s arrest. A subsequent crackdown resulted in the arrest of numerous party workers and leaders, including Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Shaukat Tarin’s Political Journey with PTI

Shaukat Tarin initially assumed the role of finance minister in April 2021. However, his term as a federal minister concluded after six months, as he could not hold office without being a lawmaker. Despite this, Imran Khan retained him as a finance adviser.

In December of the same year, Tarin secured a seat in the Senate in a by-election for a general seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the PTI banner in 2021. Subsequently, he assumed the role of finance minister, serving from October 2021 until April 2022, a period marked by the removal of Imran Khan’s government through a vote of no-confidence.

It’s worth noting that Tarin had previously served as the federal finance minister during the Pakistan Peoples Party government from October 2008 to February 2010.

A seasoned banker by profession, he dedicated 22 years to his career with Citi Bank, ultimately concluding his service as the country manager in Thailand.
