WASHINGTON: Spanish singer and songwriter Shakira was reportedly forced to leave her Barcelona home by her former partner, Gerard Pique’s father, Joan Piqué.
According to several Spanish media outlets, Joan Piqué sent Shakira an eviction notice via email in March 2023, giving her until April 30 to vacate the property or pay compensation.
Shakira and Gerard Pique, a former Barcelona football player, were in a relationship for 12 years and had two sons together. However, the singer’s relationship with Gerard’s parents turned sour after the couple’s painful split.
Reportedly, Shakira even asked her sons to stop calling Gerard’s mother, Montserrat Bernabeu, “grandmother.” She also allegedly placed a witch mannequin on her balcony facing the 60-year-old’s house and started building a wall in her house so that it wouldn’t be connected to Gerard’s parents’ home.
In addition, the singer played her diss track about Gerard and his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, on full volume at her place. The song even referenced Gerard’s mother, saying, “You left my mother-in-law as my neighbour, with the press at the door and the debt in the Treasury….”
Shakira leaves Spain with sons
Following the eviction notice, Shakira left Spain with her sons, Sasha and Milan. The singer was visibly emotional at a Barcelona airport while leaving the country with her children to go on a vacation before settling in Miami.
The news of Shakira’s eviction has caused quite a stir among her fans and the media. The singer has not yet made any public statement on the matter. However, sources close to Shakira have said that she is focusing on her music career and spending quality time with her children.
The incident has also raised questions about the relationship between Shakira and Gerard’s family. Fans are curious to know if the couple’s split was amicable or if there were underlying issues that led to the fallout.
In any case, Shakira’s eviction has brought a sudden end to her long-standing residency in Barcelona, a city that she has called home for several years.
Her fans will surely miss her presence in the city, but they are hopeful that she will continue to create music that they can enjoy and appreciate.
