ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has reacted to media reports claiming that national team players could be fined after their underwhelming performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Speaking during an interview on a local television channel, Afridi weighed in on the discussion surrounding disciplinary action and team management. He argued that sending out-of-form players back to first-class cricket and allowing them time away from international duties would be more effective than imposing financial penalties.

“They are thinking small, wondering what can be done with 5 million. In my opinion, this isn’t really a fine. Those who haven’t performed should be sent to first-class cricket. There are some players whom I believe shouldn’t come back for at least 2 years. In my view, these punishments are enough,” Afridi said.

He also stressed the need to rest certain players and restructure the side where necessary, while noting that no formal announcement had yet been made by the board.

Super Eights

“Those who need rest should be given rest, and changes should be made within the players. These punishments are sufficient; the 5 million is enough. And as far as I know, no official statement has come from the PCB regarding this,” he added.

Pakistan, champions in 2009, were eliminated from the 20-team tournament after managing just one win over a full-member side — Sri Lanka — in the Super Eights. They also lost to India and England, while their fixture against New Zealand was washed out.

The early departure marks Pakistan’s second straight T20 World Cup without a semi-final appearance, having last reached the final in 2022.

Reports suggest the PCB is assessing fines of up to Rs5 million per player, with sanctions potentially varying based on individual performances.

Pakistan are next scheduled to tour Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series in Dhaka from March 11 to 15.
