ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan has said that the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in the Rs16 billion money laundering case is a slap in the face of the country’s judicial system.

Addressing a party rally in Sharaqpur, Shekhupura, the PTI chief said that the father-son duo’s “stealing of billions of rupees” had been covered up after their acquittal.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his two sons, Hamza and Suleman, were arrested by the FIA in November 2020 under the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

On Wednesday, a special court in Lahore acquitted  Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz in the money laundering case.

In a tweet, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that “money laundering of Rs24 billion has been passed over to Hamza and Shehbaz. The “laundered money belonged to the Pakistani people,” he said adding that on the one hand, they are trying to raise money for flood victims and on the other hand, a family which has stolen billions of rupees, has been exonerated”.

PTI leader Maleeka Bokhari tweeted that “country’s leading offenders” and “convicted thieves” had been “respectfully acquitted” of their charges.

She congratulated by saying “death of justice,” Pakistanis.

PTI’s parliamentarian leader in Sindh Assembly Khurrum Sher Zaman said in a tweet: “[I am] not surprised that Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza were found not guilty in the money laundering case. The imported government controls the prosecution’s purse strings. From the very beginning, we were able to predict their motivation for gaining power”. “The true indication of nepotism is the FIA DG’s resignation and the lack of witnesses. No one is present right now to inquire as to how billions [of rupees] were moved into the accounts of the workers,” Zaman added.
