CANBERRA, Australia: In a commanding all-round performance, the Sydney Thunder registered their first victory of the Big Bash League (BBL) season 15, overpowering the Brisbane Heat by 34 runs at Manuka Oval on Monday, largely thanks to a brilliant spell from Pakistani leg-spinner Shadab Khan.
Choosing to bat first, the Thunder were propelled by a spectacular century-opening partnership between Sam Konstas and Matthew Gilkes.
The duo dismantled the Heat bowling attack, setting a formidable platform. Gilkes top-scored with a fluent 76 off 48 balls, while Konstas contributed a vital 63 off 45.
A late cameo of 25 off 11 balls from Sam Billings pushed the Thunder to a competitive total of 193 for 4 in their 20 overs.
For the Heat, Jack Wildermuth took two wickets, while star paceman Shaheen Afridi returned figures of 1 for 35.
Shadab Khan Decimates Heat Chase
In response, the Brisbane Heat’s innings never gained momentum, stifled primarily by Shadab Khan.
The Pakistani all-rounder delivered a match-winning performance, taking 4 wickets for just 24 runs in his four overs.
He critically dismantled the top and middle order, removing the dangerous Colin Munro (18), Jack Wildermuth (14), and the top-scoring Matt Renshaw, who made 43 off 28 balls.
Despite a fighting 30 from Hugh Weibgen, the Heat batting lineup faltered under constant pressure, finishing at 159 for 6 in their 20 overs. Daniel Sams provided good support with two wickets for the Thunder.
Comprehensive Victory
The victory marks a crucial turnaround for the Sydney Thunder in the tournament, showcasing a potent blend of explosive batting and incisive bowling.
Shadab Khan’s player-of-the-match performance underscored his value as a world-class T20 match-winner, steering his team to a comprehensive and morale-boosting win.
