SYDNEY: As invasive bacterial infections have been on the rise throughout the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), health authorities said, and warned local populations to be alert for their signs and symptoms on Friday.

Meningococcal disease infections

In recent weeks, the invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) and invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) infections have increased, according to the NSW Ministry of Health. The government cautioned that iGAS cases had increased in Australia and overseas and that IMD cases were above-average in NSW near the end of 2022.

At least 137 iGAS cases were allegedly reported in NSW between September and December 2022, according to the statement. Additionally, 36 IMD infections were reported last year, of which seven cases were found in December.
