HYDERABAD: Several Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidates for different seats in the Hyderabad local government (LG) elections have been elected unopposed.

According to the details, PPP candidates have been elected unopposed in 31 Union Committees of Hyderabad out of 160. The District Returning Officer (DRO) issued a notification of successful PPP candidates.

Furthermore, polls will not be held in some constituencies of Hyderabad district due to death of 11 contesting candidates. Former Chairman Qasimabad Municipal Committee, Kashif Shoro is also among the candidates elected unopposed. It is to mention here that a majority of 81 Union Committees is required for the Mayorship of Hyderabad. It is interesting to note that PPP needs to win only 50 Union Committees to appoint its mayor.

Sindh government announced postponing LG polls

It is quite pertinent to mention here that on MQM-P’s demand, the Sindh government announced postponing the Karachi and Hyderabad LG polls. However, the ECP rejected the provincial government’s notification to postpone elections and ruled that the local bodies elections will be held as per the earlier schedule, on January 15.

Rejecting Sindh government notification and request, the Election Commission of Pakistan directed the Interior Ministry to ensure the deployment of Rangers and the Army on highly sensitive polling stations in Karachi and Hyderabad. Later, the Sindh government also announced to hold the local government (LG) polls on January 15, 2023.
