ISLAMABAD/KAMPALA: At least 17 people were killed after two boats crashed in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Lake Kivu, according to officials.

Lt Pecos Mulunga, a security official in South Kivu, said that the two boats collided as they traveled from the Lake Kivu Silimu landing site to Idjwi Island.

“So far, 17 people have been confirmed dead after their bodies were recovered,” said Mulunga.

Both boats had dozens of people

According to the information they obtained from the naval security force, both boats had dozens of people and items on board, and some of the passengers had been saved by fishermen.

He continued by saying that some survivors received medical attention at the provincial general hospital in Bukavu. Due to overloading, boat accidents are frequent on the lakes and rivers of Congo. Last October, a boat capsized on the Congo River, killing 27 people.
