BEIRUT: A senior Hezbollah official escaped an Israeli assassination attempt on Thursday in Beirut, three security sources stated, as Israeli attack there killed around 22 people and the UN stated its peacekeepers in southern Lebanon were in danger.
Reuters cited security sources as saying that Wafiq Safa, who leads Hezbollah’s liaison and coordination unit responsible for working with Lebanese security authorities, was targeted by Israel on Thursday night but survived.
Earlier on Thursday, Reuters reported that Israeli attacks on central Beirut targeted at least one senior leader in Iran-backed Hezbollah.
The Israeli strikes targeted a densely packed residential neighborhood of apartment compounds and small shops in the center of Beirut. Israel did not issue any evacuation warning ahead of the attacks on Thursday, which were the deadliest strike on central Beirut since the start of the hostilities.
The number of casualties rose rapidly, and as midnight approached the Lebanese Health Ministry reported around 22 people killed and 117 injured. Among the dead was a family of eight, including three kids, who had evacuated from the south, a security source told Reuters.
Reuters reported at least one strike hit near a gas station and a thick column of smoke was also visible. A large fire blazed in the background as rescue and emergency workers searched the rubble for survivors, local media reported.
