DAKAR: Thousands of Senegalese took to the streets to celebrate the West African country’s Independence Day on Tuesday. People thronged the streets of the capital Dakar to see the 1st military parade to be held in the city in 4 years due to a break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was a display of patriotism just a week after political differences led to violent clashes between security forces and opposition supporters.

Daouda Tall, a University of Dakar student, said, “It’s the first time I’ve attended,” as troops sang and clapped while tanks drove down a central road.

Tall said that the scene was really moving, as when you see this, you are proud to be Senegalese. Citizens have peace of mind as they know they are safe.

Senegal last week witnessed clashes between armed forces and opposition backers

Senegal had gained its independence from France in 1960 and is widely considered to be one of the most stable democracies in the region, but many worry that President Macky Sall may try to run for a 3rd term which has been the cause of protests over the previous few years.

Armed forces clashed last week with backers of opposition political leader Ousmane Sonko, who was sentenced in a court case for libel.
