DHAKA: A second retired military general was sworn into Bangladesh’s interim government on Friday, joining three other new members in the caretaker administration formed following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid student protests.

Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, 71, along with three additional appointees, has been inducted into the “council of advisers,” the interim cabinet now overseeing Bangladesh under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Hasina, 76, fled to neighboring India on August 5 via helicopter as protests surged through Dhaka, marking a dramatic end to her 15-year autocratic rule. The unrest, which led to more than 450 deaths, primarily due to police action, leading up her ouster.

Chowdhury, a three-star general who served as the army’s second-in-command, retired in 2010, the year after Hasina assumed office.
