ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: Aides to US President Joe Biden have found a fresh batch of classified government records at a new location, in a growing political embarrassment for the Democrat president.

It is not clear yet that when or where Biden’s aides found the additional tranche of files.

The first cache was discovered at a private office in Washington DC that Biden had been using after his vice-presidency. The matter is being reviewed by the US Department of Justice.

White House abstained from commenting on discovery of first files

The first batch of about 10 documents was found in November at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank near the White House, but only came to light this week.

Those papers reportedly include US intelligence memos and briefing materials on Ukraine, Iran and the United Kingdom.

The White House has not yet commented on the newly discovered files. Earlier on Wednesday during her daily press briefing, Biden press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined responding to questions about the first cache of papers.

She said that the matter is under review by the Department of Justice,” adding “I’m not going to go beyond what the president shared yesterday.”

Meanwhile, Biden said on Tuesday that he was “surprised” by the discovery of the classified papers and was “co-operating” with the justice department’s review.

The controversy comes as the Biden is under scrutiny from a new Republican majority in the US House of Representatives. Former President Donald Trump is facing a criminal probe for allegedly mishandling classified documents.
