ISLAMABAD: A scheme that is backed by the European Union (EU) offers Ukrainians a chance to replace old light bulbs with LED bulbs that are energy efficient. This initiative comes due to energy shortage as a result of Russian attacks.

Ukraine’s Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said that at post offices all adults would be able to replace five incandescent light bulbs with five LED bulbs.

The initiative aims to cut the deficit in energy by a quarter as missile and drone strikes by Russia have crippled Ukraine’s infrastructure such that millions of Ukrainians have to spend hours without light, water, or heating.

Speaking at a press briefing, Svyrydenko said that because Ukraine is fighting on economic, energy, and military fronts, it’s an important step to reduce pressure on the country’s energy system.

She informed the participants that a single LED bulb utilizes eight times less electricity as compared to the older bulbs.

EU’s envoy to Ukraine Matti Maasikas has said that the bloc would provide as many as 30 million LED light bulbs while France would provide 5 million more bulbs.

Maasikas added that the EU was also delivering generators and other related equipment.
