SCCI Voices Concern over Increasing Environmental Pollution

PESHAWAR: Fuad Ishaq, President of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), on Sunday, expressed serious concerns over increasing environmental pollution in the wake of using alternative sources of fuel by people owing to the low gas pressure problem.

He urged the caretaker Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Justice (R) Syed Arshad Hussain Shah, Governor Haji Ghulam Ali, the provincial Chief Secretary, and district administration to make contact on urgent grounds with the center and resolve these problems once and for all.

In a meeting with Additional Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Sania Safi in her office, Fuad Ishaq apprised her that the SCCI has taken up the gas issue with the federal government, relevant ministry, and top officials in an efficient way because unjust was being carried out with KP.

During the meeting, presidents of the city bazaar, traders’ leaders, and members of the business community were also present in large numbers, according to a media release issued here Sunday.

Traditional Methods Cause Environmental Pollution

The SCCI chief said the people in Peshawar, along with KP, have been compelled to use the traditional way as an alternative source of fuel for the fulfillment of needs of routine life. The traditional methods, like the use of coal, timber, and other sources, are causing an increase in environmental pollution, and there is fear of the spread of lung and respiratory diseases, he added.

The SCCI chief told the senior official that the total gas production in KP is 550 MMCFDs, whereas gas consumption in the province is 200MMCFDs, and the rest of the 350MMCFDs were given in the national grid. If the 200MMCFDs were fully supplied to the province to resolve the gas issues.

Moreover, he said that the resolution of the gas issue would remove the tension of people along with the wheel of business and industries would continue to run, and people would also avail employment opportunities in the province.
