SC Takes Suo Motu Notice of IHC Judges’ Letter

ISLAMABAD:  The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday took suo motu notice of Islamabad High Court judges’ letter, local media reported. A seven-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan will take up the matter on Wednesday.

Earlier, Pakistan Federal cabinet approved formation of a commission to investigate allegations leveled by judges of IHC with former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani as its head, local media reported on Saturday.

As per media reports, the commission will submit its report within two months following completing the inquiry into the allegations.  The decision to probe into the allegation was made in a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar also said that the government took the decision to form a commission to probe the allegations.

Who is Tassaduq Hussain Jillani?

After serving more than ten years as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, including a brief tenure as the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Tassaduq Hussain Jillani retired as the top judge on July 10, 2014.

He was born on July 6, 1949. The former CJP did his LLB from the University of Punjab and started practicing law in Multan in 1974. He became an apex court lawyer in 1983. Jillani was sworn in as the Lahore High Court (LHC) judge in 1994. And after ten years was elevated as a judge of the SC in 2004. He served as the judge of the Apex Court till imposition of emergency in November 2007. Tassaduq Hussain Jillani then again took oath as the Supreme Court judge in 2008. He was appointed as the CJP in 2013.
