Audio Leaks Commission: SC Suspends Govt. Notification

The SC issued the order while hearing petitions filed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Supreme Court Bar Association President, SCBA Secretary Muqtedir Akhtar Shabbir, and Advocate Riaz Hanif Rahi pleading the court to declare the commission’s formation illegal.

The government of Pakistan had last week formed a judicial commission to investigate into the veracity of recent audio leaks.

The government formed a three-member judicial commission, headed by Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.

Earlier, during the hearing the CJP also observed that the formation of the judicial commission “interfered in the judiciary’s internal affairs”.

He said that there were errors in the notification issued by the federal government for the constitution of the commission.  The CJP remarked that the Constitution of the country gives complete freedom to the judiciary. He said, “We have no other structure but the authority of justice and morality.”

Babar Awan appeared in the court on behalf of the former Prime Minister Imran Khan while SCBA President Abid Shahid Zuberi, Advocate Riaz Hanif Rahi and Secretary Muqtedir Akhtar Shabbir were also present alongside Advocate Riaz Hanif Rahi.
