“Save Tomorrow” Run & Walk in Islamabad Promotes Drug Abuse Awareness

ISLAMABAD: The Karim Khan Afridi Welfare Foundation (KKAWF) and Serena Hotels hosted the 8th edition of the “Save Tomorrow” Run & Walk on Saturday, drawing over 500 participants committed to combating drug abuse in society.

The event took place at Fatima Jinnah Park (F-9 Park) and included students, teachers, diplomats, families, and differently-abled persons, all uniting to raise awareness about the dangers of drug overdose and to honor those who have lost their lives to addiction.

The event was also supported by the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, Capital Development Authority (CDA), US Educational Foundation Pakistan (USEFP) and FM 89 amongst others.

The event featured participants competing in four categories: ages 16 and below, 16+, 60+, and Differently Abled Persons. This structure encouraged broad community involvement in highlighting the urgent need for prevention education regarding drug addiction in Pakistan.

The “Save Tomorrow” event included various activities such as competitive walking and running, open mic tributes, and an engaging flash mob performance. The day commenced with the Police Band performing the national anthem, setting a patriotic tone for the occasion.

In her speech, Cristina Von Sperling Afridi, Chairperson of KKAWF, stressed the importance of protecting Pakistan’s youth from the perils of drug abuse. With a youth population of 150 million under the age of 30 in Pakistan and approximately 8.9 million individuals reported to be on drugs as of 2015, Afridi emphasized the pressing need for effective prevention programs. She cited recent successful drug busts by the Anti-Narcotics Force, which targeted suppliers to students.

Diplomatic representatives also addressed the gathering, praising the collaborative efforts of the organizers and participants in taking a stand against this critical global issue.

Prizes were awarded to winners in each category, celebrating their commitment to the cause and encouraging continued participation in such vital initiatives.

The 8th edition of the “Save Tomorrow” Run & Walk exemplified the impact of collaboration in the fight against drug addiction. Both Serena Hotels and KKAWF reaffirmed their dedication to organizing events that inspire community engagement and foster lasting change.

Previously, KKAWF, in partnership with Serena Hotels, has organized various sports events for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, including cycling, football, rugby, volleyball, basketball, and additional running and walking activities at the Islamabad Sports Complex.
