DAMASCUS: A Saudi technical team has arrived in Syria to discuss the reopening of the Kingdom’s embassy, according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The delegation, led by Ghazi bin Rafea al-Anzi, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met with Syria’s Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister Ayman Sousan at the foreign affairs ministry in Damascus.

During the meeting, al-Anzi expressed gratitude to Sousan for the warm welcome and for facilitating the team’s arrival. In response, Sousan assured the Saudi delegation that the ministry was fully prepared to provide all necessary support to facilitate their task.

Saudi Arabia and Syria to Resume Diplomatic Ties

Last month, Saudi Arabia and Syria agreed to resume diplomatic ties. This development followed a meeting between Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on April 18. Prior to that, Syria’s FM Faisal Mekdad had visited the Kingdom.

On May 9, Saudi Arabia announced that it would allow its diplomats to resume work in Damascus after more than a decade of withdrawal due to the Syrian civil war.

Furthermore, Syria was reinstated in the Arab League in May after a 12-year suspension. Al-Assad recently attended the League’s 32nd summit in Jeddah, describing it as a “historic opportunity” to address regional crises.
