RIYADH: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held a phone call with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al Shaibani, to discuss the latest developments in Syria.
“During the call, they discussed developments in Syria and the efforts being made in this regard,” a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement said on Friday.
The development comes after Syria’s Defence Ministry announced the temporary truce early Friday, effective from 3 a.m. local time, in the contested Aleppo neighbourhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Achrafieh, and Bani Zaid.
The agreement provided armed groups with a window to withdraw with their personal light weapons under escort to Kurdish-controlled areas further east, according to the Week.
It is pertinent to mention that Saudi Arabia has always supported Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, stressing the importance of enhancing stability and extending security in a manner that serves the interests of the Syrian people.
Meanwhile, the United States has also welcomed a ceasefire in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo following three days of intense fighting, US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said on Friday.
In a statement posted on X, Barrack “warmly welcomed” the temporary ceasefire and extended “profound gratitude to all parties, the Syrian government, the Syrian Democratic Forces, local authorities and community leaders, for the restraint and goodwill that made this vital pause possible.”
