RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Roads General Authority (RGA) has said that the Saudi Road Code introduces a comprehensive classification system for roads both within cities and in rural areas to enhance road safety and quality of the Kingdom’s road network.
This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life and ensure the highest standards of safety and efficiency across the Kingdom’s road network, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Thursday.
The Roads General Authority (RGA) noted that the Saudi Road Code defines several categories of roads. These include highways, which support high-speed travel, feature full access control, and connect cities and governorates without traffic signals or direct intersections.
Local roads are designed for low-speed travel within residential and commercial areas, carrying light traffic while prioritising safety. Arterial roads facilitate movement within cities and between key districts, handling heavy traffic volumes with controlled intersections and traffic signals.
Additionally, collector roads serve to link neighbourhoods to arterial roads by directing traffic from residential zones to main routes.
The authority emphasised that the code serves as a comprehensive technical reference for all entities responsible for roads in Saudi Arabia, including ministries, city development authorities, municipalities, and governorates.
It is designed to equip these bodies with the information needed to plan, design, implement, operate, and maintain all types of roads across the Kingdom while considering environmental factors and the requirements of autonomous vehicles.
The code also provides comprehensive guidelines, illustrations, procedures, and checklists for all types of road networks, ensuring they meet minimum standards for quality, safety, operational efficiency, economic performance, and sustainability.
