RIYADH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia seeks to boost its number of medals in the 19th Asian Games through the participation of 193 male and female athletes, who will compete in 19 sports in the upcoming games hosted by the Chinese city of Hangzhou and held from September 23 until October 8, with the participation of more than 12,000 male and female athletes from 45 Asian countries.

In previous Asian games, Saudi national teams secured a total of 61 medals, of which 25 were gold. The start of the Asian Games dates back to 1913 when the first multi-sport games were held in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, under the name “Eastern Games.”

In 1917, the tournament was named the “Far Eastern Championship Games” when it was held in Shanghai, China and it continued to remain in use until 1938. —APP
