RIYADH: A medical team at King Saud University Medical City, through the King Abdullah Ear Specialist Centre, has achieved a milestone by successfully performing the first implantation of a smart cochlear implant in the Middle East and Africa, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.

Dr. Maryam Al-Juhani, an otolaryngology consultant, explained that this new-generation cochlear implant system is unique in its ability to analyse audio programmes and store them directly within the device using built-in memory.

It also allows for future software updates, significantly enhancing the user experience and improving the efficiency of ongoing medical care.

The King Abdullah Ear Specialist Centre is the region’s first facility dedicated to hearing impairments and cochlear implant procedures.

It utilises cutting-edge medical technology and adheres to the highest international standards in both diagnosis and treatment.
