RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, arrived in Tehran on Saturday, marking his first visit to Iran since the two countries reached a landmark agreement to end their seven-year diplomatic rift and re-establish relations.

The visit is seen as a significant step towards further improving ties between the two regional powers. The diplomatic breakthrough was brokered by China in March, resulting in an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to mend relations and reopen their respective embassies.

Prince Faisal’s visit to Tehran underscores the commitment of both countries to enhance dialogue and cooperation. During his visit, Prince Faisal is scheduled to meet with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, exploring areas of mutual interest, and promoting regional stability.

Diplomatic Relations Between Iran and Saudi Arabia

The reopening of embassies is a crucial aspect of the ongoing reconciliation process. Iran’s government spokesman, Ali Bahadori Jahromi, stated that Prince Faisal’s visit is anticipated to facilitate the reopening of the Saudi diplomatic mission in Tehran. In early June, Iran reopened its embassy and consulates in Saudi Arabia as a gesture of goodwill.

According to Iranian media, the Saudi embassy in Tehran is likely to initially operate from a hotel before relocating to its permanent location in the capital city. The move signifies the gradual restoration of diplomatic presence and the commitment of both countries to rebuild trust and cooperation.

The visit of the Saudi foreign minister to Iran marks a significant milestone in the thawing of relations between the two nations. As they engage in constructive dialogue, both Saudi Arabia and Iran aim to strengthen ties, foster regional stability, and contribute to peace and security in the Middle East.
