RIYADH: Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan has held a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and discussed the evolving security situation in the region and growing tensions linked to Iran’s recent attacks on Kingdom and regional states.

“During the call, they discussed the continued flagrant Iranian attacks against the Kingdom and countries in the region and exchanged views on ways to address these developments in a manner that contributes to maintaining the Kingdom’s security and the safety of its citizens and residents,” the Foreign Ministry in a statement said on Wednesday.

Prince Faisal emphasised the importance of coordinated international efforts to address the escalating threats and maintain stability across the region.

He also welcomed the United States’ decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organisation, describing the move as an important step toward strengthening regional security.

The Saudi foreign minister reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for initiatives that promote stability, security, and prosperity across the Middle East and beyond.

Saudi Ministry of Defence said earlier that the Kingdom’s air defence systems successfully intercepted several drones and ballistic missiles launched from Iran.

It may be recalled that Saudi Arabia on Monday warned that Tehran’s behaviour risks triggering a wider regional escalation that could ultimately harm Iran the most.

In a statement, the Kingdom said Iran’s continued attacks and hostile rhetoric do not reflect wisdom or a genuine commitment to avoiding further conflict, stressing that such actions threaten regional security and stability.

“Iran’s current actions toward our countries do not reflect wisdom or serve the interest of avoiding a widening of escalation, in which Iran would be the greatest loser,” it said.

Tensions in the Gulf region have escalated following coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28. The attacks have further reduced hopes for a diplomatic resolution to Tehran’s long-running dispute with Western countries and Israel over its nuclear programme.

In response, Iran announced it was targeting American military bases in several Gulf states. These strikes were strongly condemned by the affected countries, which reported that some attacks damaged civilian infrastructure.

Pakistan condemned both the initial strikes on Iran and Iran’s subsequent retaliatory attacks across the region, urging all sides to exercise restraint and work toward de-escalation to prevent further conflict.
