BEIRUT: Saudi Arabia’s envoy to Lebanon has said that Lebanese political leaders should elect a new president immediately to secure the stability of crisis-hit country, Arab media reported on Wednesday.

He said: “We do not accept the present presidential space that looms the unity and stability of the people in Lebanon.” Ambassador Walid Al-Bukhari held discussions with several officials of Lebanon on Wednesday.

In a tweet after discussions with the grand mufti of Lebanon at Dar Al-Fatwa, Al-Bukhari added: “The meeting was a chance for us to discuss the latest developments, particular the presidential deadline and its significance in addition to a number of matters of mutual interest.”

Al-Bukhari pointed out the KSA’s support for Lebanon, its organizations, and Islamic-Christian co-existence and hoped the country would “witness a promising future.”

The grand mufti said: “KSA’s role in Lebanon is necessary, as it is in the Arab and global arena.

“Electing a president in the country and stabilizing Lebanon, and its development, are main responsibilities that fall on the Lebanese first and then on the Arab brothers and friendly nations that support and give assistance,” it said.

The presidential vacuum in the country has entered its 7th month following MPs failed to secure a quorum during twelve attempted voting sessions.

Earlier, the US State Department urged political leaders in Lebanon to act elect a president immediately to save the economy from crisis.
