ISLAMABAD: Saudi oil marketing firm Wafi Energy has donated 5,000 litres of petrol to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to support ongoing flood relief efforts, its CEO announced on Thursday, as monsoon rains continue to devastate large parts of the South Asian country.
The contribution was made during a ceremony held at the Saudi Embassy in Islamabad, as part of broader Saudi efforts to support Pakistan.
Saudi Aid agency King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has already delivered food, shelter, and other essential supplies to over 200,000 flood-affected individuals across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.
Since late June, heavy monsoon rains and flash floods have claimed the lives of more than 929 people and affected over four million nationwide, according to figures from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by recent floods in Pakistan, reiterating the Kingdom’s commitment to stand firmly with the Pakistani people in their time of need.
Al-Malki said that alongside government initiatives, Saudi companies operating in Pakistan were actively contributing to relief activities.
“Wafi Energy, which recently acquired Shell, is working with local authorities and has provided much-needed fuel to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for its operations in affected areas,” he said.
Zubair Shaikh, CEO and General Manager Mobility of Wafi Energy Pakistan Limited, highlighted the scale of the disaster, pointing out that millions of people had been affected, with over 4,400 villages inundated across Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“There has been massive damage to homes, livestock, and infrastructure,” he said.
A representative of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) thanked the Saudi government for extending maximum support to its humanitarian relief operations across the flood-affected areas of Pakistan, noting that the assistance included the provision of diesel and motor gasoline to sustain rescue and relief efforts.
Wafi Energy, which acquired an 87.78% stake in Shell Pakistan Limited last year, now operates over 600 fuel stations and oil terminals across the country.
The company, rebranded from Shell Pakistan, distributes petroleum products, CNG, and lubricants nationwide.
Fuel supplies play a vital role in disaster response, allowing the NDMA to operate rescue boats, deliver relief goods to isolated communities, power generators at relief camps, and keep emergency vehicles running in flood-affected areas.
