Saudi Doctors to Separate Conjoined Tanzanian Twins

RIYADH: A complex operation to separate conjoined Tanzanian twins will be conducted on Thursday in Riyadh, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The surgery, which follows directives from King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will be conducted under the supervision of KSrelief head Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah. A medical team is set to separate the two-year-old Hussien and Hassan at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

In a statement, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said that the surgery is expected to last about 16 hours over nine phases, with 35 specialists, consultants, technical, nursing, and support staff taking part. Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah added that the twins arrived from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in August for various medical tests and examinations, which demonstrated that they are conjoined in the lower chest, pelvis, abdomen, liver, urinary tract, and intestines.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support and help of the Saudi conjoined twins’ separation project. Since its launch in 1990, the project has operated on 58 twins from several nations worldwide.
