Saudi-Backed Project Clears 1,504 Mines in Yemen in One Week

RIYADH: Masam project of the Saudi Aid agency removed 1,504 explosive devices from various parts of Yemen last week.

According to a recent report cited by Arab News, under the project of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center’s (KSrelief) 1,459 unexploded ordnance, 40 anti-tank mines, four anti-personnel mines and one improvised explosive device were dismantled.

Ousama Al-Gosaibi, the initiative’s managing director, said that 495,855 mines have been cleared since the project started in 2018.

The explosives had been planted indiscriminately, posing a serious threat to civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.

Demining operations were carried out across several regions in Yemen, including Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale, and Saada.

The project focuses on training local demining engineers, equipping them with modern tools, and providing support to Yemenis injured by these explosive devices.

Demining teams are working to clear villages, roads, and schools to ensure the safe movement of civilians and enable the delivery of vital humanitarian aid.
