MADINAH: Saudi Arabia’s Madinah city is currently undergoing significant development to enhance its infrastructure, increase tourism, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors, noting its historical and religious importance for Muslims around the world.
The Madinah Region Development Authority and other entities are completing pedestrian-friendly upgrades around the central area and near the Prophet’s Mosque, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Aligning with Saudi Vision 2030, the city’s projects, including electric vehicle access and a pedestrian path to Quba Mosque, alongside landscaping and public amenities aimed to enrich the experience for pilgrims and residents, are being upgraded.
The Rua Al Madinah Project, located near the Prophet’s Mosque, is a landmark hospitality development designed to accommodate up to 30 million visitors annually.
Spanning over 1.5 million square meters, the project features an extensive tunnel network and a collection of luxury hotels, reinforcing Madinah’s status as a world-class destination for religious tourism.
The Madinah Gate Project, located east of the Prophet’s Mosque near the Haramain High-Speed Railway station, spans 60,000 square meters.
The project showcases distinctive architecture connecting to key roads for easy access to religious sites, the airport, and the high-speed rail, aiming to enhance tourism and entertainment.
The rehabilitation projects in Madinah are transforming historical sites into attractions that can be visited year-round.
The area near Mount Uhud is also undergoing development, offering residential units and scenic views of historical sites located 3 kilometres north of the Prophet’s Mosque.
Essential services such as hospitals and schools are being seamlessly integrated into the area, ensuring a well-rounded urban environment.
Adjacent to this development, a 33,000 square meter project is underway, offering a range of amenities including restaurants, cafés, an open-air museum, water features, a historical virtual reality experience, and a dedicated theatre for hosting cultural and entertainment events.
In parallel with these infrastructure and tourism initiatives, Madinah’s transportation network is also being modernised.
The Madinah Buses project enhances connectivity by linking key locations such as the Prophet’s Mosque, Quba Mosque, the airport, and the Haramain High-Speed Railway Station.
These upgrades are designed to improve accessibility, elevate the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, and further establish Madinah as a leading global destination for religious tourism—anchored in innovation, heritage, and sustainability.
