RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant milestone in road safety, with a remarkable 35 percent decrease in road crash fatalities recorded over the past five years, the state news agency SPA reported on Friday.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of road crash deaths in the Kingdom decreased from 9,311 in 2016 to 6,651 in 2021. This substantial drop in road fatalities is even more impressive when considering that the period under review encompassed the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, marked by strict curfews and lockdowns.
Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030
The decline in road crash deaths is seen as a remarkable achievement and aligns with Saudi Arabia’s strategic goals outlined in Vision 2030, the nation’s ambitious blueprint for comprehensive transformation and development. Among the key objectives of Vision 2030 is a concerted effort to enhance traffic safety across the country.
This achievement reflects the commitment of Saudi authorities to improving road safety, implementing rigorous measures, and raising public awareness about responsible driving. The decline in road fatalities not only underscores progress in saving lives but also contributes to a safer and more secure environment for all road users.
