ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan following days of border clashes, joining a growing chorus of regional powers urging restraint and dialogue.

In a statement posted on the Saudi Foreign Ministry’s X account, the kingdom said it “expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s welcome of the signing by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Afghanistan of an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability between the two countries, during the round of negotiations held in Doha.”

“The kingdom affirms its support for all regional and international efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability, and its continued commitment to ensuring security that achieves stability and prosperity for the brotherly peoples of Pakistan and Afghanistan,” the statement added.

The ceasefire was reached this weekend during talks in Doha, mediated by Qatar and Turkiye, following a week of heightened hostilities along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border. A follow-up round of negotiations between the two countries is scheduled to take place in Istanbul on October 25.

Saudi Arabia — which signed a defence pact with Pakistan last month, pledging that any aggression against one country would be treated as an attack on both — also commended the “diplomatic efforts and constructive role” of Turkiye and Qatar in brokering the truce.

Riyadh said it hopes the ceasefire will mark “a positive step toward ending tensions on the border between the two countries.”

On Sunday, the foreign ministries of Turkiye, Oman, and Qatar also issued statements welcoming the agreement and reaffirming their commitment to regional peace and stability.
