RIYADH: The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has confirmed that Eid ul-Fitr will be observed on Friday, March 20, 2026, after Shawwal moon was not sighted anywhere in the Kingdom.

Moon-sighting committees convened at 12 locations across Saudi Arabia, but no credible testimony of the crescent was received, according to an official statement.

Observations were conducted at major sites including Tumair, Sudair, Shaqra, Umm al-Qura, Al-Wajh, Halat Ammar, Qassim, Dammam, Madinah, and Hail, with senior astronomers and designated moon sighters coordinating the effort.

Despite extensive observations at all locations, the crescent marking the beginning of Shawwal could not be sighted. After reviewing all submitted reports, the Supreme Court ruled that Ramadan will complete its full 30 days this year.

As a result, Muslims in Saudi Arabia, along with followers in some other countries will celebrate Eid ul-Fitr on March 20, marking the conclusion of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court on Tuesday called on Muslims across the Kingdom to sight the crescent moon of Shawwal on the evening of Wednesday.

Shawwal, is the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Eid celebrations include congregational prayers at mosques and open fields, communal gatherings, family feasts, and acts of charity, in line with longstanding traditions.

The announcement also provides certainty for Muslims planning travel, family visits, and charitable initiatives during the festive period.

With Ramadan drawing to a close and Eid approaching, the Kingdom is set to usher in one of Islam’s most joyous occasions, bringing families and communities together in celebration.
