RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned and criticized the repeated and irresponsible actions of the Swedish authorities by granting some extremists official permits to burn copies of the Holy Qur’an.
Protesters including Salwan Momika, the Iraqi immigrant to Sweden who desecrated the Holy Qur’an outside a Stockholm mosque last month, had received permission from Swedish police to desecrate the Qur’an outside the Iraqi embassy on Thursday.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs termed the decision as an action that systematically provocate feelings of millions of Muslims around the world, according to Arab News.
The ministry added that it would summon the Swedish embassy’s charge d’affaires to hand him a protest note with the Saudi’s request to the Swedish government to take all immediate and necessary steps to stop these disgraceful acts, which are against all religious teachings, and international laws and norms.
Saudi Arabia rejects hateful actions
The ministry affirmed Saudi Arabia’s categorical rejection of all these actions that generate hatred between religions and limit debate between peoples.
The kingdom joined the international community in criticizing the incidents and several other nations have also summoned their Swedish diplomats, with Iraq expelling its ambassador earlier on Thursday.
