DAMASCUS: Saudi Arabia has reopened its embassy in the capital of Syria after it was closed since the start of the crisis in the country 12 years ago, Saudi Gazette reported on Tuesday.
Acting Saudi Chargé d’Affaires in Syria, Abdullah Al-Harees, announced the opening of the embassy, in a ceremony in Damascus. Several Syrian ministers, senior officials, members of the accredited diplomatic corps, and a group of dignitaries and intellectuals were present on the occasion.
Addressing the ceremony, Al-Harees said: “This day is an important moment in the history of relations between the two countries.” He also underscored the keenness of the embassy to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
Syrian Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Deputy Minister Ayman Raad speaking on the occasion, stressed that through this step, the relations between both countries will be enhanced.
Earlier, Syria had appointed Dr. Muhammad Soussan as the new ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The new envoy assumed charge in Riyadh in January this year. Saudi Arabia restored diplomatic ties with Syria in May 2023, after 12 years.
