DAMASCUS: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan announced on Saturday that the Kingdom, in partnership with Qatar, will provide joint financial assistance to support state employees in Syria.

He made the remarks during a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shaibani, in Damascus.

“The Kingdom will provide, with Qatar, joint financial support to state employees in Syria,” Prince Faisal said.

Syria and Saudi Arabia had previously discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties in the financial sector.

Prince Faisal highlighted Saudi Arabia’s role in supporting the lifting of economic sanctions on Syria, affirming that the Kingdom will remain a key supporter of Syria in its journey toward reconstruction and economic recovery.

He said he was being accompanied by a high-level economic delegation from the Kingdom to “hold talks (with the Syrian side) to bolster aspects of cooperation in various fields.”

Prince Faisal stated that in the coming days, several visits by Saudi businessmen to Syria are planned to explore investment opportunities in sectors such as energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and more.

He also met with President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, while a high-level economic delegation held discussions with Syrian officials on avenues of cooperation aimed at supporting Syria’s economic recovery and strengthening institutional development.

The financial support comes to Syria as part of the commitment by Saudi Arabia and Qatar to fostering stability in the Arab state, alleviating humanitarian suffering, and advancing the interests of the Syrian people. It reflects the deep-rooted bonds and longstanding historical ties that unite the people of the three countries, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar affirm that this support reflects their commitment to advancing development efforts, strengthening economic and social stability in Syria, and contributing to the improvement of living conditions for the Syrian people.

It is worth mentioning that on a visit to Riyadh earlier this month, US President Donald Trump said he would lift US sanctions on Syria, a move that paves the way for economic recovery in the war-torn country.

The European Union also recently lifted economic sanctions on Syria. In February, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa visited Saudi Arabia in his first trip abroad as president.
