RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has offered condolences to Algeria over victims of wildfires that killed more than thirty people and forced mass evacuations.
The foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia shared its sympathy and wished the wounded a speedy recovery, according to AFP.
As temperatures hit 48 degrees Celsius in parts of Algeria, it recorded 97 blazes across sixteen provinces, fanned by strong winds, according to Algerian interior ministry.
Ten soldiers were among those who lost lives, as blazes raged through residential areas.
Mass evacuation in Algeria
About 1,500 people were evacuated from the Bouira, Bejaia, and Jijel provinces east of the capital city Algiers, the ministry said.
The three provinces in the Mediterranean coastal region of Algeria have witnessed the worst of the fires.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased on Monday.
The interior ministry said that 7,500 firefighters and 350 firetrucks were engaged with aerial support to extinguish the flames.
