RIYADH: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia has launched a new initiative to replace the visa sticker on passports with an electronic visa system that will be read via a QR code.

The move is aimed at automating and improving the quality of consular services offered by the ministry and will cover different kinds of visas, including work, residence, and visit visas.

In its first stage, the new system will be activated in Saudi Arabia’s missions in seven countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The initiative is part of the ministry’s efforts to develop a mechanism for granting visas and streamlining the visa application process.

The QR code-based electronic visa system will eliminate the need for visa stickers on passports, making it convenient for applicants to apply for visas and reducing processing times.

The system will also enhance security and prevent fraud, as the data contained in the QR code will be verified by the Saudi authorities before granting the visa.
