RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), has enhanced services for pilgrims by introducing advanced artificial intelligence technologies and digital solutions under the Makkah Route Initiative.
Now in its eighth year, the initiative operates through 17 ports across 10 countries, reflecting the Kingdom’s continued commitment to improving services for pilgrims and ensuring a smooth travel experience, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.
The newly developed mobile device uses data and AI technologies to simplify travel procedures, particularly for elderly pilgrims and persons with disabilities, through a flexible and automated system.
It also verifies travel documents and visas with a high level of accuracy, helping to ensure safe and seamless processing from the point of departure.
The device is capable of capturing biometric data, taking facial images, and reading passport information in less than 40 seconds per pilgrim.
The initiative highlights the progress made by Saudi national technologies in accelerating procedures and improving operational efficiency at entry ports while enhancing the overall pilgrim experience.
This year’s Hajj is expected to take place between May 25 and May 30, subject to the sighting of the moon, which determines the start of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah.
