RIYADH: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense announced that air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed five drones in the Kingdom’s Eastern Region, according to an official statement released on Monday.

Major General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, confirmed that the unmanned aerial vehicles were detected and neutralized by Saudi defense forces before they could reach their targets.

The incident was reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), which cited Al-Maliki as saying that the drones were intercepted as part of the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to safeguard its territory and protect critical infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia has significantly strengthened its air defense capabilities in recent years, deploying advanced monitoring systems to track and respond to aerial threats such as drones and missiles. The Eastern Region, home to major energy installations and strategic facilities, remains a sensitive area in terms of national security.

Authorities did not immediately disclose further details regarding the origin of the drones or potential damage, but confirmed that the situation was handled quickly and effectively by the Kingdom’s defense forces.

Officials emphasized that Saudi Arabia continues to remain vigilant against aerial threats and is committed to ensuring the security of its airspace and the safety of its citizens.
