JEDDAH: The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is set to host the “International Conference on “Women in Islam”: Status and Empowerment” in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the generous patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The three-day conference, scheduled to commence on Monday, November 06, 2023, aims to celebrate the accomplishments of Muslim women throughout history and in contemporary times.

This significant event intends to highlight the invaluable contributions of women to the development of OIC Member States while countering negative propaganda that portrays Islamic teachings as an obstacle to women’s rights. The conference will emphasize that Islamic teachings have always promoted justice and equity for women.

The primary objective of the conference is to formulate a comprehensive plan for legal and political reforms that will promote justice and empower women in Islamic societies. A significant outcome of the event is expected to be the adoption of a document titled “The Jeddah Document for Women in Islam.” This document will outline key initiatives and strategies geared towards empowering women.

Significance of OIC Conference on Status of Women in Islam

The conference will feature five working sessions, bringing together ministers, officials, scholars, and intellectuals of both genders to delve into the status of women and their rights in Islam. These sessions will explore opportunities for empowering Muslim women in education and employment, addressing various issues related to women in contemporary societies.

The initiative to organize this conference focusing on women’s empowerment was presented by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the 49th Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) held in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania on 16-17 March 2023.

The proposal garnered support, leading to the adoption of a ministerial decision in favor of organizing the conference. Saudi Arabia’s efforts underline its commitment to supporting women’s empowerment domestically and within the international framework, in line with its dedication to enhancing the role of women in the areas of comprehensive development within the OIC and globally.
