RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the targeting of the Consulate General of the United Arab Emirates in Iraqi Kurdistan.

“The Kingdom affirms that the repeated targeting of diplomatic premises clearly contravenes the relevant international laws and norms, including the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, stressing the importance of respecting the inviolability of diplomatic missions’ premises,” the Ministry in a statement said on Tuesday.

The Ministry also expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the brotherly United Arab Emirates.

Iraqi Kurdistan’s counter-terrorism service said late on Monday that ‌it had ‌downed three ‌drones ‌in Irbil, with debris from one of ‌the drones falling near the UAE consulate.

Earlier Saudi Arabia offered condolences and sincere sympathies to the governments and peoples of the State of Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates over the martyrdom of a number of members of their armed and security forces while performing their national duties.

The ministry affirmed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the State of Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in this tragedy and its readiness to make all its capabilities available to support them in any measures they take, wishing the injured a speedy recovery, reports Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi air defence systems also intercepted and destroyed several drones and a ballistic missile targeting key locations across the Kingdom, the defence ministry said, as regional tensions continue to escalate.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Major General Turki Al-Maliki, said nine drones heading toward the Shaybah oil field were intercepted and destroyed in the Empty Quarter desert.

Saudi Arabia on Monday criticised Iran’s recent actions toward Gulf nations, warning that Tehran’s behavior risks triggering a wider regional escalation that could ultimately harm Iran the most.

In a statement, the Kingdom said Iran’s continued attacks and hostile rhetoric do not reflect wisdom or a genuine commitment to avoiding further conflict, stressing that such actions threaten regional security and stability.
