RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has condemned the Israeli Parliament’s call to impose control over the occupied West Bank and the occupied Palestinian Territories.

The foreign ministry, in a statement on Thursday, described this action as a blatant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions.

“Such provocative steps by the Israeli occupation authorities undermine efforts to achieve peace through the two-state solution and show persistence in destruction and instability,” it added.

Israel’s Knesset approved a symbolic measure calling for the annexation of the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. Lawmakers voted 71-13 in favour of the motion, which called for “applying Israeli sovereignty to Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley”.

The ministry in the statement reaffirmed the Kingdom’s absolute rejection of the Israeli occupation’s violations against the Palestinian people and their rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination.

It also called on the international community to take serious steps to implement UN resolutions that uphold the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to live in dignity on their land, within their independent state along the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Ash-Sharif as its capital.

OIC condemnation

Meanwhile, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also strongly rejected and condemned the Israeli Knesset’s demand.

In a statement on Thursday, it described it as a dangerous escalation that seeks to solidify the illegal colonial occupation and undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.

The OIC affirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and emphasised that the Israeli occupation and settlements are illegal under international law.

It called for their immediate cessation in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.

It also reiterated its call for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by taking necessary political and legal actions to uphold the rights of the Palestinian people.
