RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program (NLFDP) has announced plans to enhance cow milk production through genetic improvement initiatives, aimed at enhancing productivity and strengthening the country’s dairy sector.
Supervisor of Biotechnology at NLFDP Dr. Sulaiman Alajel, told Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that cow farming projects in the Kingdom are ambitious and promising.
He emphasised that these initiatives aim to provide world-class dairy experiences by leveraging advanced technologies and promoting increased private sector involvement and investment.
Dr. Alajel noted that dairy products produced in the Kingdom rank among the best globally, crediting this achievement to the adoption of modern biotechnology.
This technology enhances milk production to meet domestic demand, supports progress toward self-sufficiency, and significantly boosts the overall quality and safety of dairy products.
The genetic improvement testing conducted by the programme can reduce the prevalence of genetically linked and production-related diseases by up to 60% by identifying and eliminating animals that carry genes associated with chronic illnesses.
