Sara Inman Murder Case: Co-Accused Sent on Physical Remand

ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions in Islamabad on Thursday sent Samina Shah, the co-accused and mother of the main suspect Shahnawaz Amir in the Sara Inam murder case, on two-day physical remand.

Samina Shah, who was arrested by Islamabad police on Wednesday in connection with the murder case after her extended pre-arrest bail expired, was produced in the court of Senior Civil Judge Mohammad Amir Uzair. 

As the hearing began, the judge inquired from the investigating officer if he had submitted a challan in the murder case.

The investigation officer replied that the challan has been prepared and will be submitted today.

To this, the judge expressed his displeasure and said that 14 days have passed, and “you have not yet submitted the challan.

The investigation officer sought five-day physical remand of the co-accused.

During the hearing, the counsel for the defendant Amjad Hashmi said that his client was cooperating with the police since day one. The counsel said that Saminna Shah herself got her son arrested by the police.

The lawyer said that section 109 has been framed against his client and that the police should tell the court where the consultation was held before inserting the clause.

He pleaded with the court that Samina Shah should be sent to jail on judicial remand. 

After hearing of arguments from both sides, the court granted two-day physical remand of the co-accused in the Sara Inam murder case.

On Wednesday, Samina Shah appeared before District and Sessions Court Judge Sheikh Sohail, who denied her request for an extension to her bail.

Soon after the judge refused to extend the pre-arrest bail plea, the Islamabad police arrested her from the court premises.

Sameena Shah is the wife of senior journalist Ayaz Amir, who was also detained by the Islamabad police in the Sara Inam murder case. On September 27, a district and sessions court issued his released orders.

On September 26, the Islamabad local court granted Sameena Shah pre-arrest bail against a surety bond of Rs50,000 and ordered her to join the investigation.

Later, the court extended her pre-arrest bail two times.

Sara Inam, a Canadian national, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Shahnawaz, in their Shahzad Town farmhouse on the night of September 22.

The Islamabad police arrested Shahnawaz Amir on September 23 on charges of murdering Sara Inam in their farmhouse, where the suspect lived with his mother. 

On October 7, a sessions court in Islamabad sent Shahnawaz Amir on 14-day judicial remand after the completion of his physical remand.

Shahnawaz has admitted to the crime during the investigation stating that he was suspicious that his wife had an affair with an unknown person.

The couple tied the knot merely three months back in Chakwal after Sara Inam reached Chakwal without informing her parents about her marriage with Shahnawaz Amir.

According to the FIR of the murder, Sameena Shah called the police and reported that her son, Shahnawaz, had killed his wife with a dumbbell. Police later reached the crime scene and arrested Shahnawaz, who had locked himself in his room after committing the crime.

The police staff broke the door and found blood stains on his hands and clothing. Shahnawaz admitted to hitting his wife with a dumbbell after an argument. The police later discovered the victim’s body in a bathtub by the police, the FIR states.
