Key points

  • Pakistan need win after washout
  • Semi-final hopes hang in balance
  • Poor World Cup record vs England

KANDY: Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan has played down the prospect of facing England fast bowler Jofra Archer in their crucial ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights encounter at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Farhan, the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 220 runs from four innings at an impressive average of 73.33, said he is unfazed by the challenge Archer presents. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the right-hander expressed confidence in his preparation.

“Not a big deal facing Jofra Archer, we play against similar bowlers in Pakistan who can clock in at around 145 kph,” Farhan told the reporters.

“So, it’s not a big deal, but as you said, he must have planned against me; I also have plans against him.”

The fixture carries added weight for Pakistan after their Super Eights opener against New Zealand in Colombo was abandoned due to persistent rain. With only one point from that washout, Pakistan are under pressure to secure a win to keep their semi-final hopes firmly in their own hands.

Needing victory

A loss to England would leave them needing victory over co-hosts Sri Lanka while also depending on other Group 2 results to fall in their favour.

History also poses a challenge, as Pakistan are yet to beat England in T20 World Cup contests. Despite that record, Farhan remained optimistic, particularly about Pakistan’s spin attack, which he believes could trouble the two-time champions.

“What we saw in the Sri Lanka-England game was that the ball was gripping and England struggled against spin,” Farhan stated.

“Sri Lanka have one or two spinners but we have five in all so we will give England a tough time on a pitch that looks good and will grip,” he added.
