NEW YORK: South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has warned world leaders regarding the dangers of fake news and the mishandling of AI, calling for the constitution of a UN committee to regulate the online sphere, Western media reported on Wednesday.

South Korean President told the UN General Assembly in New York that if they failed to curb the spread of fake news resulting from the misapplication of digital technologies and AI, their freedom would be at risk. He said that the market economy anchored in liberal democracy would be in danger, and their very future would be under threat.

President Yoon Suk Yeol said that Seoul would host an international forum on digital technology and Artificial Intelligence to discuss the formation of a regulator.

Earlier, in July US President Joe Biden had hosted a tech meeting and got top US tech firms to pledge guardrails against dangers from AI, cyber-attacks, and fraud.

Similarly, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a world-first meeting on AI to be organized in the current year, seeking a leading role for the United Kingdom in limiting potential risks.

The UK PM wants a future global Artificial Intelligence regulator to be based in London, sources said, arguing that his country has the requisite expertise in the field.
