ISLAMABAD: In a remarkable display of skill, South African batsman Ryan Rickelton scored a century against Afghanistan in today’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match at Karachi.
This inning not only underscores Rickelton’s growing prominence in international cricket but also highlights his important role in South Africa’s batting line-up.
Facing a disciplined Afghan bowling attack, Rickelton reached his century in 101 balls, supporting the South African innings and guiding his team to a competitive total, according to Cricbuzz.
His performance was characterised by precise shot selection and strategic partnerships, reflecting his maturity and adaptability on the field. In the process, Rickelton broke a record that was set by AB de Villiers in 2013.
Before today, de Villiers’ 70 against India in Cardiff in 2013 was the highest individual score posted by a South African wicketkeeper in the Champions Trophy. But on the back of his sizzling knock today, that record belongs to Rickelton.
Born on July 11, 1996, in Johannesburg, Rickelton has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket since his debut for Gauteng in 2015.
His impressive first-class average of 50.63, including 18 centuries, showcases his potential and readiness for the international stage.
In January 2025, he made headlines by scoring, in a test match, a double century (259 runs) against Pakistan in Cape Town, becoming the first South African opener in 12 years to achieve this feat.
In the limited-overs format, Rickelton’s role is equally notable. Before today’s century, his highest ODI score was 91 against Ireland in October 2024. His consistent performances have solidified his position as a key player in South Africa’s top order.Sports
