Russia’s Wagner Claims It Controls Ukrainian Town of Soledar

MOSCOW: The chief of Russia’s private military firm Wagner on Tuesday said that his troops had taken control of the eastern Ukrainian mining town of Soledar, Russian media reported.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a statement cited by Russian media that their units took control of the whole territory of Soledar.  He added that fighting is still taking place in the town. He further said that the number of prisoners will be announced on Wednesday. However, he did not share more details.

According to Reuters, Kyiv said earlier in the day that its troops were still holding out despite a Russian onslaught. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his military command did not mention control of Soledar on Tuesday evening.

The Ukraine President repeated his call for more Western weapons, adding Moscow was gathering its troops to intensify its campaign. However, he did not provide more details.
