Venediktov reported on social media that Surovikin, who at one time was commander of Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine, has been removed by official order. He did not provide any further details about the development.
General Sergei Surovikin has not made any public appearance since a small uprising in June by the Wagner mercenary group and its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, against Russia.
In October he was appointed as head of Russian military operations in Ukraine, but in January he was replaced by General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the general staff.
